The "Cap and Trade" system that Gore advocates promises a market oriented solution to Global Warming, and for that reason is favored by enlighted business elites. But the record so far for cap and trade schems shows only mixed success, according to Doug Henwood in a recent Nation article. A bigger problem with cap and trade is that most likely it will crowd out more effective non-market approach for reducing CO2 emissions, namely by taxing it. A tax puts a clear price on emissions that all businesses can factor into. Over the next few years, I expect Cap and trade Vs taxing will represent the right and left sides of the global warming debate. If the dangers are as great as what Gore says, then we shouldn't pin our future to the whims of the market.

Say what you like, 'knight4vision,' but Gore's book 'Earth in the Balance' is one of the better pieces of analysis around on the interaction between capitalism and the ecosystem, and holds up very well. I know the left doesn't think he goes far enough, since he's still a Democrat, while the right attacks him as a 'socialist' complaining about mere 'changes in the weather.' But there's serious stuff here to be examined seriously.

Somebody should have reminded Gore's media handlers that Gore invented the internet. How long
can Gore keep hopping around on one foot, with the other stuck in his mouth? He needs to fall!
