Bill Fletcher misunderstands the situation.
The people who wrote the immigration laws knew that businesses want cheap labor. They tried to put a floor under how low wages could go by putting very reasonable limits on the number of immigrants that can come here every year. If you allow in too many people, it increases the supply of labor, which drives down wages. And the illegals are blameworthy because they know that they are breaking the law when they come here and when they work without authorization.

The solution is for the people to struggle to improve their countries so they don't have to leave en masse and come to the U.S. looking for work. The solution is NOT for them to come here and flood our labor market

Billions of people around the world are very poor. If we allow millions upon millions of people to enter the United States, the vastly increased supply of labor will causes wages to fall drastically. Mainly working class people will be the victims of this. Look, hundreds of thousands of people can come here from Malaysia, the Philippines, Ghana, Mexico, and so on can come here and be janitors. Then all the African-Americans who got janitorial jobs at $12/hr with benefits and could lead fairly dignified lives are either going to take a pay cut or be out of work.

African-Americans struggled, fought, and died to get where they are. They deserve to reap the fruits of their struggles. Let people from the countries above (and maybe those aren't precisely the right countries to list but you get the idea) struggle, fight, and die to improve their countries. They should NOT be allowed to come here illegally.

It seems that Anders wrote his comment without bothering to read what Carl Davidson wrote. Too bad, Carl's note was a thoughtful addition to Fletcher's piece.

Fletcher's right to take this guy on, but the view, unfortunately, is widely held among low-income Blacks.

I'd stress, however, that immigration is an economic problem rooted in the North-South divide, and it's economic solution lies there, concretely, in all the policies in the federal government, Wall Street and the Board of Trade. Those policies--everything from unequal treaties to keeping the price of corn below its cost of production--are what compels displaced peasants to migrate or starve. And changing those policies with progressive high road alternatives is the core of any solution.

Right now, again unfortunately, there is no majority for amnesty in the country, including among the working class already here. But forming a progressive majority to reverse a good number of these root-cause policies may be very possible now, if there's a political will to do it.
