David Schweickarts ideas about economic democracy are very stimulating and relevant. But I have one question. One of the markets in capitalism is the labour market, and this market he rightly wants to abolish by introducing democracy within firms, one person one vote etc.. At the same time he accepts a capitalist, entrepreneurial sector in the economy where entrepreneurs can hire labour and pocket the profits. These firms compete with the labour run enterprises for labour power (wage labour), so the sale of labour power as a commodity is not suspended in his system? If I understand him correctly he wants a major reform in the labour market, workers sell their labour power to either the coops or to private upstarts. and if their is any unemployment, workers who don't succeed in selling their commodity, the state moves in as "employer of last resort". Good institutions, but the labour market is still there.

Professor Schweickart,

I wish I could share in your apparent optimism that Obama might do something for the people. In my mind, after watching the president and his people move further and further to the right for the last 5 months, I'm beginning to doubt that ANY progressive change will occur under Obama. He seems intent on maintaining monopolistic business as usual, and he seems to be allergic to any kind of accountability for the people who wrought so much damage to this country. I'm talking about the war-mongers and the Wall Street crowd. I have lost all faith in the guy.
