If this is the article (http://www.naomiklein.org/articles/2009/05/cure-layoffs-fire-boss) then it's pretty pathetic. While I'm a big fan of co-ops, they're no panacea. I think established co-ops that are well capitalized and competitive in their markets can be a layoff cure... in fact, they tend to act as a counter-cyclical force. But co-ops are still businesses that must operate in a market. Workers would be wise to look at company buyouts on a case-by-case basis. As yourself: why is this company failing? Is this a good investment (essentially, potential worker-owners are putting their retirement into their company... not a great strategy from the point of view of asset allocation).

The real value of co-ops and ESOPS is when they're a part of a pro-active strategy by labor to increase labor management of the economy. They are of limited value as a defensive strategy.

There is a more recent and more comprehensive film about worker coops in Argentina, the award-winning ARGENTINA TURNING AROUND. Here are a couple of useful links - for the film -http://www.movingimages.org/page7.html AND for an interview with the filmmakers - http://upsidedownworld.org/main/content/view/2007/32/
